This is certainly the ‘JDF Drupa’, and it is also turning out to be the event that sees offset
printers investing in digital presses as a means to develop alternative revenue streams and
open new markets. Integrating offset and digital print production workflows under the
umbrella of a JDF-enabled MIS is emerging as the major theme of the show. |

At the Xerox press conference at Drupa last week, CEO Ann Mulcahy spoke about how digital is
a real option for breathing new life into printing businesses, and here at the NGP Daily we
are hearing about more and more digital orders being made with the aim of running them
alongside conventional offset. Kraft Druck, located in Ettlingen near Karlsruhe in Germany, is
one such company, having confirmed an order at the show for a Xerox DocuColor 6060 digital
colour production press driven by a Creo Spire server.

The company already has cross-vendor communication between its Creo Prinergy prepress, MAN Roland
presses and HIFLEX MIS with MBO finishing to be integrated soon. It also plans to link the new
DocuColor digital press through JDF.
Specialising in the production of marketing literature and displays for advertising agencies as well
as magazines and catalogues in multiple languages,Kraft Druck says that its decision to invest in the
Xerox DocuColor was driven by customer demand and the desire to win new business in new market sectors.
‘Our customers do a lot of targeted marketing and need to take delivery of a small number of products
to test with before going on to order a full print run. Having digital print capability will be
invaluable for this,’ says Thomas Brickwedde, head of office-based sales and IT at Kraft Druck.
‘Additionally, variable data printing is becoming more and more important, with different campaigns
tailored for different regions,’ he says. ‘We anticipate that this new investment will really help us
to further grow our business.’
