Hauppauge, New York — Since April 2004, a trendsetting postpress JDF/JMF integration, using a Muller Martini
saddle stitcher has been successfully in operation. "Due to our workflow solution, we were able to gain savings
of up to 10%", states JDF pioneer and Managing Director Michael Bauer of Bauer Druck in Vienna. Werner Naegeli,
President & CEO of Muller Martini Corp. explains "At Graph Expo we want to demonstrate the advances in computer
integrated manufacturing to our North American customers. We’re connecting the dots with working applications,
so printers and bindery professionals can see how the new integrated workflows will increase their efficiency
and benefit both themselves and their customers." |
A Muller Martini PrimaPlus saddle-stitcher was networked with the HIFLEX management information system (MIS)
in this key JDF/JMF postpress installation in a production environment at Bauer Druck. Considerable reductions
in make-ready times have been achieved with HIFLEX's JDF interface to Muller Martini stitchers, increasing
productivity significantly. With a single command, all machine-relevant data, such as signature size, product
thickness, final trim size, staple type and position, run length and page counts of sections, are transferred
from the HIFLEX production control system to the Muller Martini "MM Port" machine control console and then
relayed to the saddle-stitcher. Thanks to motorized adjustments, saddle-stitchers equipped with the "automatic
make-ready system" (Amrys) are adjusted to the product to be processed within three minutes. During the production
the machine status is fed back to the HIFLEX production control system in real-time. The production status, speed,
number of good sheets and spoilage are all displayed in the HIFLEX system. This means that production planners and
sales administration staff can track live production at all times.
Managing director Michael Bauer explains: "The JDF data transfer from HIFLEX greatly reduces the make-ready
time of our new saddle stitcher, and our networked MAN Roland presses. This ultimately increases the productive
time of these costly and most valuable machines. Through the direct JMF status feedback from the machine control,
we obtain reliable information on the production status as well as accurate data for calculating actual costs." |
To illustrate the efficiency improvements that networked production brings to a company, Muller Martini and HIFLEX will
demonstrate JDF/JMF connectivity live at Graph Expo on Muller Martini’s booth (#1447).
Last but not least, HIFLEX has already implemented a large number of JDF installations with prepress and press
manufacturers (Agfa, Creo, Esko-Graphics, Heidelberg, KBA, Komori, MAN Roland, Mitsubishi, and Rampage, amongst
others). "HIFLEX MIS is ready to network everything from administration, through prepress, press and postpress in
a single plant, and we plan to put this into practice within the next two months," says Mark Anderson, President of
HIFLEX Corp. "Thanks to some pilot customers, we already have experience concerning the enormous potential savings
that such connectivity brings. Ultimately, an operation with conventional processes will have a hard time competing
with an operation using a JDF workflow." |
