MAN Roland
In February 2003, Druckhaus Berlin Mitte GmbH (DBM) implemented the world's first JDF workflow to operate under real-life production conditions. This has been achieved by a collaboration between Hiflex and MAN Roland, a pairing that ushered a new era of JDF connectivity and that has been awarded in several categories with the CIP4 International Print Production Innovation Award (CIPPI Award).

How does the JDF/JMF link work?
The JDF enabled production management system of MAN Roland is called printnet PressManager (PECOM). The JDF files generated by Hiflex are forwarded to the presses through this software solution which also continuously feeds back messages on production status to Hiflex via JMF.

The basis for the data to be forwarded to production is the job sequence determined by production planning and control (HIFLEX scheduling as production control computer). The precise manufacturing description is generated in the course of production cost estimation. If there are any last-minute changes, the job cost estimation is converted into production cost estimation which generates new valid JDF data for press presetting.

HIFLEX transmits commercial (job name, customer) and technical data (format, colors, grammage, product thickness) for press presetting to the printnet PressManager (PECOM - see screen shot). MAN Roland's PressManager, in turn, signals various press events to the HIFLEX system via JMF (Job Messaging Format). This production feedback is used both in the scheduling and the shop floor data collection (PDC).

World premiere: first JDF real-life installation already since February 2003
Says JDF pioneer and general manager of Druckhaus Berlin Mitte (DBM) Herbert Preißler: "Hiflex Scheduling, Hiflex shop floor data collection and Hiflex JDF connectivity to our MAN Roland printing presses raised our production by 7 percent. Despite the bad market prices, we can still earn money. A printing house without JDF connectivity will definitely not be able to compete in the long run."

Measurable effects (as stated in connection with CIP4 Awards 2005)
The Return On Investment (ROI) of the JDF connectivity project in Druckhaus Berlin-Mitte is 991,9% within five years. This means that the investment paid off 10.91 times. The Net Present Value is EUR 1,595,626.- or US$ 2,090,834,-. Which equals an Internal Rate of Return of 236%.

Swiss show case printing company implements first three stage JDF connectivity world-wide (MIS - Prepress - Press), April 2003
By implementing Job Definition Format (JDF), the Neidhart + Schön Group in Zurich has embarked upon a new era in enterprise-wide networking. Aided by a notable trio of external suppliers - Hiflex, Kodak and MAN Roland, Neidhart + Schön's administration, prepress, and production departments are seamlessly sharing digital information. This has resulted in more visible, precise, and efficient processes. Read the complete article "From vision to reality" (NGP case study)

Printing house Kraft wins a CIP4-Award 2005 and is the world's first completely networked company (MIS - Prepress - Press - Postpress)
A similar constellation as at Neidhart + Schön in Zurich can also be found at Kraft Druck. The commercial sheet-fed printing house (18 MAN Roland printing units in 40" format) has implemented JDF connectivity in November 2003 .
Kraft Druck have achieved a couple of beneficial effects by their connectivity between administration and the MAN Roland PressManager:

  • Improvement of the internal communication
  • Elimination of data re-keying
  • Minimizing of errors
  • Reduction of pre-setting times on the production systems, resulting in an enhanced productivity and degree of efficiency
  • More standardized and unified production processes

The direct effect of the JDF connectivity project was an increase in productive hours (print run hours) in the first period of +9.6 percent (2004 compared to 2003). Machinery and staff remained the same. The extra productive hours multiplied with the hourly cost rate of the respective machines lead to an increase of added value, whereas the direct costs are subtracted. The prices used in the financial calculation are the list prices. This means that the costs are comparable to a similar investment made today (Kraft Druck was an early adopter of JDF technology and profited from special discounts on software, installation and training). The Return On Investment (ROI) of the JDF implementation at Kraft Druck, calculated as described above, is 446.5% within five years , which means that the investment is paid back 5.46 times.

The JDF network at Kraft Druck has already been extended. In autumn 2005 the MBO folders were connected to the MIS. Now, the control systems of the folding machines are also provided with administrative data and pre-setting parameters via JDF. With the extension of the integration, the world's first live, fully networked workflow between prepress, press and postpress has been realised at Kraft Druck.

JDF also for web presses (further world premiere)
The first JDF- based interface to a web press was recently installed at Lane Press in Burlington, VT. Management Information System (MIS) software vendor Hiflex and press vendor MAN Roland jointly established the connection. HIFLEX and MAN Roland have jointly installed many JDF connections to sheetfed presses, and now the same technology and benefits are brought to MAN Roland's web printing world. Philip Drumheller, President of Lane Press said, "The JDF link between Hiflex and the ROTOMAN eliminates re-keying of data, which not only saves time, but helps to avoid errors and reduces make-ready times. Furthermore, as the job information comes directly from HIFLEX MIS, our pressmen are always working with the most current version of a job ticket. With the use of JDF job tickets from HIFLEX MIS, it is now possible to automatically connect the ink-key settings from the Creo Prinergy pre-press system, which saves even more time. The real time feedback from the ROTOMAN press to the electronic schedule allows everyone in the plant to see which job is on press, its current status, progress, good sheets and waste. Having all of this data available lets us focus our efforts on servicing our customers." Continue reading the article "HIFLEX and MAN Roland install world's first web printing JDF interface"

Cross-company print production using JDF and HIFLEX Print Support
Three companies are awarded the CIP4 Innovation Prize 2007 for their cross-company network. In the past few years, the awards referred to workflow optimization within the company due to JDF integration. This year and for the first time, the CIP4-Award was given to a network of buyers, printing houses and print finishers, who use the HIFLEX Software tool for cross-company communication and the handling of inquiries and orders. The awarded implementation integrates three companies: the print buyer Gutenberg-Werbering from Linz, Austria, Printing House Berlin-Mitte (DBM), who provides Gutenberg with print products and Grieger Offsetdruck, from which DBM purchases external work (UV varnishing). All three companies now receive the CIPPI-Award for the "Most innovative use of process automation technology".
