CIP4 awards Köller+Nowak for "Biggest Improvement in Efficiency and Customer Responsiveness". Full-service printing house Köller+Nowak of
"Drupa-City" Düsseldorf had already set a course for automation years ago. In the early stages of their journey, Köller+Nowak has seen that automation
does't just begin when a job is created in the system but much earlier: it begins with the customer's operations. With the implementation of the HIFLEX
eBusiness module in August 2002, Köller+Nowak integrated their customers transparently and efficiently into order processing which provided tangible
benefits for the printing house and eventually has also significantly strengthened customer relationships. |
| Köller+Nowak invested into JDF technology as one of the first printers worldwide in April 2005. It is significant for their consistent focus on customer
benefit and satisfaction that JDF was not only seen as a chance for internal automation but as a bonus for their end customer. Consequently, Köller+Nowak
implemented a JDF-link to Adobe Acrobat, Professional 7 via HIFLEX and delivered a system that is used by the end customer with big results. Their customer
is further integrated into their JDF-Workflow which continues with the JDF linked Kodak Prinergy Prepress Workflow system. |
| For their proven benefits of the JDF connectivity, Köller+Nowak won the 2006 CIPPI Award that was announced world-wide by the CIP4 Organization.
Köller+Nowak's presented Return on Investment (ROI) of the JDF implementation at nearly 800 percent and paid back 8,98 times in a five year period
with a Net Present Value (NPV) of EUR 226,505,--.
In 2006, these CIP4-JDF "CIPPIs" were awarded for the second consecutive year running with the same results in three categories of first place in
two categories and honorable mention in a third category. These specific CIP4-JDF "CIPPI" categories are:
|
| Köller+Nowak was awarded the category the "Biggest improvement in efficiency and customer responsiveness as a result of process automation".
With this award, CIP4 honors the commitment of the printer and the supporting vendors of HIFLEX, Kodak GCG and Adobe, for their consistent
realization of the JDF-connectivity between the printer's administration, the prepress department and the end customer, as well as Köller+Nowak's
steady endeavor to extend the customer value. |

| First class in terms of "Biggest improvement in efficiency and customer responsiveness as a result of process automation": Printing house Köller+Nowak
from drupa-city Düsseldorf won a CIPPI Award 2006. The trophy was handed over at 22nd Sep 2006, and the supporting vendors each received a personal
certificate. From left to right: Thomas Reichhart (HIFLEX), Ursula Voss-Eiden (Kodak), Ingo Nowak (Printing house Köller+Nowak), Jutta Koch (Adobe),
Stefan Daun (CIP4). |

|
| Process automation implementation at Köller+Nowak led to the streamlining and optimization of internal and external communication processes.
Standard communication processes between customer, CSR and prepress were automated through extensive integration into one central IT system and the
HIFLEX MIS with its JDF and eBusiness solutions. The system is now the linch-pin for the effective order management and the customers' integration
into the production processes. |
| The e-business portal at Köller+Nowak offers their customers online access to the quote and order archive, the possibility to place their inquiries
and to modify them into an order, to check on the status of the job or to order from a stock of finished goods and finally, to place a print order
when the stock is too low. The customer has the capability to personalize print products within a given corporate design for endless scenarios such
as business cards, magazine covers. As a result of surveys in 2005 and 2006 conducted by the German "Institut für rationale Unternehmensführung in
der Druckindustrie (IRD) e.V.", which is a streamlining institute for the printing industry, it was discovered that 95% of Köller+Nowak's customers
use one or more functions of the Köller+Nowak e-business portal and it was for this proven business success that Köller+Nowak was awarded the IRD
title "Best Practice" in both years running. |
When customers use Adobe Acrobat Professional 7, the JDF file generated by HIFLEX can be sent to the customer contact person via email. When
they open the e-mail and click on the attachment where Acrobat will be launched and the JDF file can be processed. Files ending with ".jdf" are
automatically assigned to this application. The PDF content files may be attached to the JDF job parts (e.g. cover and text), checked before data
transmission and finally, the job can be submitted to Köller+Nowak.
Ingo Nowak, Managing Director at Köller+Nowak, explains the advantages: "It is no longer necessary to assign electronically delivered files manually to
the order and we can directly start with the production virtually as soon as the content files are there. Through the automatic preflight system the
customer detects erroneous production data on his own before he transmits them to us. This avoids time delays caused by laborious clarifying processes
that are due to variations of the delivered files from the job specification." |
| With job creation in HIFLEX MIS the customer receives the order confirmation via E-Mail incl. JDF attachment. The customer can open the JDF job specifications
in Adobe Acrobat Professional 7, where the job is displayed in a tree structure. HIFLEX transfers general job data for each product part (e.g. content and cover) via JDF. |
| The customer can assign the separate PDF content files directly to the job parts and become part of the displayed structure even before upload. Before data transmission
important preflight checks are conducted:
The Preflight profile - which is configured by Köller+Nowak - has been imported into Adobe and is integrated into Adobe's "Submission Manager"
(together with further options). |
| Due to the networking project Köller+Nowak as well as their customers profit from time and cost savings. The improved communication processes especially between customer,
prepress personnel and CSR led to enhanced efficiency and improved customer service. The results are:
"I congratulate Köller+Nowak to the CIPPI Award 2006, they made JDF to the backbone of the their operating procedures and communication processes.
And I find it interesting the benefits a rather small printer realizes through automation via JDF. An example that most printers can take to heart,
not just the industry's giants", CIP4 secretary Stefan Daun closes. |

| Improvements in the area of order preparation were also achieved through the JDF link between HIFLEX MIS and Kodak Prinergy. The workflow optimizations are comprised of:
