Estimate and Imposition
The convenient estimating module, backed by expert knowledge stored within the system, prevents errors. The resulting high throughput in bid preparation leads to a significant cost savings and enhanced marketing success. In the follow-up to estimation, quotations and production steps are system-generated and graphically represented.

HIFLEX makes it possible to estimate sheet and web offset, continuous, label, folding-box, flexo-graphic, digital and screen-printing jobs - all automatically. For each of these process types, the program provides references. Within the estimation module, any of the various product types and finishing work can be combined in a single estimate. The system offers a JDF interface, so job data can be imported from professional purchasing systems like HIFLEX Print Support. This typically saves days in correspondence and significant administrative costs to both the printer and the print buyer.

Creation of the production flow is usually fully automatic, at the click of a mouse and using network format, generates a graphical overview of the structure of the product to be estimated. The entire production run can be viewed at a glance and the image is not only convenient, but true to reality and factually correct. This is decisive for connectivity, since the exact planning of the production flow forms the basis for downstream planning and control, as well as for the JDF-based triggering of the production machinery.

Production steps are displayed in the network structure clearly arranged and accurate. Product and process definitions within the preliminary costing form the basis for the technical routing, scheduling and historic costing. The perfect bound catalogue is produced in two versions: "German" (15,000) and "English" (10,000). Only the English version includes a wire-bound insert completed in the same run. Folding is green and binding brown. The structure conforms to the JDF-specification.

The system breaks down the partitions (for example, 8-sided parallel), the sheet folding (8-sided parallel folded 2-up) and finally the resulting printing sheets (3 folding sheets on the printing sheet). In creating the estimate, the system takes account of the binding sequence and all necessary measurements and other elements to create and graphically display the production sequence. The entire process uses a freely configurable rule set. This ensures that once established, production standards will be applied. As necessary, the calculated geometries and measurements can be changed intuitively, directly on the layout. The resulting quotation parameters, with the order attachment, can be fed into connected prepress workflow systems, through JDF StrippingParams.
Because the signatures of the folded sheets are initially defined, any number of combined forms can be defined from these sheets. The figure shows an 8-pager, which is produced in combination with a 4-pager ( ¼ of the sheet remains unused). The signatures are already with dimensions. All dimensions conform to the configured operational standard, but also allow for modifications. The printing sheet definition includes the color bar, gripper and printing sheet margins.

The expert knowledge that is indispensable for the automatic calculation of the production process is stored as logical parameters. These are easily editable by the system administrator, allowing the program logic to be tailored to the individual needs of a particular company. Shifting the expert knowledge from the estimator to the software decreases the estimator's workload while reducing errors.

Inquiries to suppliers (for example, book binders) can be efficiently managed by implementing the link to HIFLEX Print Support. Print Support is an internet and e-mail-based system that handles inquiries, administration and order placement for print and/or post-processing firms.

Access to the extensive paper database makes price comparisons simple. Quotations are automatically generated in standard desktop applications, eliminating re-keying of data, thereby reducing errors. All customer data as well as product definition are taken directly from the estimate. The output format and price overview can be changed on a customer-by-customer basis. (For example, some customers may require paper prices to be shown, but others may not.)

Invoice of full costs, along with a breakdown of fixed and variable costs, is easily produced. This makes it possible to react to market conditions on a job-by-job basis. The estimate is prepared for instance in Word and it is not needed to re-key any data.
