Integration with Postpress
The HIFLEX system dynamically generates a new JDF file for every order produced. Each JDF file provides the detailed data required for the successful linking of postpress machines. The JDF data used to automate each post-press operation includes the printing and folding sheet structures required by postpress devices to completely automate set-up.

For a successful JDF/JMF integration of postpress operations, the whole production chain, including pre-production (particularly print-plate production) must be considered. This is important because networked production only functions when the data values that are sent via JDF to a folding machine, for example, must also reach the printing plates and the printing sheets.
The illustration depicts a dimensioning of a folding sheet in the HIFLEX MIS, in this instance a 16-page saddle stitching. The over fold is shown in purple. For easy identification it is depicted disproportionally, as are all elements. When clicking on the dimensions, the folding sheet can interactively be modified. The established or modified data form the basis of the technical JDF order parameters that are passed on for further processing.

The basis for the transmission of JDF data to the post-press operation is the printing and folded-sheet structures calculated by the HIFLEX system. HIFLEX produces detailed data for folding-sheet geometry, placement of folding sheets on the printing sheet (for example, multiple-use folded and stapled) for use in constructing the printing sheets, ready for the precise positions of cut and fold marks as well as staple type and position. HIFLEX uses the calculated technical parameters from its estimation module to forward JDF job data to the cutting machines, folding machines, staplers and adhesive binders. For setup of layouts, staplers, trimmers and stitchers are important, along with signature strength (which derives from the number of pages, weight and volume of paper), cropping measurements (header, footer and front sections) as well as the assignment of individual signatures to particular layouts.

The transmission of job specific data with JDF which is derived from each specific order and created dynamically makes repeated input of customer and order data unnecessary. This HIFLEX workflow dramatically reduces corrections due to errors and ensures the consistency of data across systems.

To ensure the correct transmission of pre-set values, HIFLEX has developed special mathematical formulas and has implemented new functionality within HIFLEX MIS. This extension was recognized by the CIP4 Innovation Award. In actual production, this award winning implementation leads to a significantly increased productivity and flexibility.

For example, manual setup of a cutting program is no longer necessary in a networked cutting machine. Furthermore, experience has demonstrated that production for networked folding machines can be raised by 15%. And the average time for initial adjustment of eight stations in a multiple stapler can be reduced from 70 minutes (without motorized shafts) to 20 minutes (with motorized shafts and JDF).

During production, machine status is transmitted via JMF to HIFLEX MIS and job progress, speed, number of good copies and amount of waste flow into HIFLEX Scheduling, Production Monitor and SFDC.
