CIP4 (International Cooperation for the Integration of Processes in Prepress, Press and Postpress)
In January 2002 Hiflex became CIP4 full member as one of the first MIS manufacturers worldwide. Since January 2006 Hiflex as the first pure MIS vendor became CIP4 "Partner Member".
CIP4, the International Cooperation for the Integration of the Processes in Prepress, Press and Postpress, brings together vendors, consultants and end-users in the print communications, graphic arts industry, and associated sectors, covering a variety of equipment, software, peripherals, and processes. The aim is to bring forward process automation on the basis of generally accepted standards such as the "Job Definition Format" (JDF).
Starting in 2005, the CIP4 Organization annually and world-wide announces the CIP4 Innovation (CIPPI) Awards for most successful JDF real-life implementations. In 2007, Hiflex for the third year in succession won two out of the three categories and received second place in the remaining categories. The awards recognize users and vendors of JDF products for both technical innovation and business improvements. They also demonstrate how Hiflex continues to lead the field in real-world JDF. Today, Hiflex has conducted more JDF installations than all other MIS vendors combined.

Hiflex and JDF
JDF stands for "Job Definition Format" and is the industry specification designed to facilitate process automation and the integration of different applications and systems in and around the graphic arts industry. JDF also enables the integration of business management and job planning applications into the production workflow. JDF is based on the W3C's Extensible Markup Language (XML), ensuring maximum interoperability between different platforms and ready interaction with Internet systems.
In the language of JDF as established in the JDF Specification (download at www.cip4.org), the product plan ("Product Intent") and the process definition ("Process Intent") are differentiated from each other. The product definition ("intent") describes the structure of the print product to be produced and is stored in the JDF data tree structure. The process definition describes the production methods, wheres process groups are connected by input- and output definitions (ressources).

The Hiflex business software philosophy is based on considerations and facts that are consistent with the JDF Specification. A print product that needs to be estimated and produced generally contains two essential levels of the product definition and the process definition:

The product definition includes information about the product type, number of pages, final format, color, and paper type, as well as special processing forms or refinements. In the process, a print product is divided into various product components such as cover and content. This is necessary if inks or print substrates vary according to specific product components.

The process definition is derived from the product definition, because the positions essential for production are already preset through the definition of the product components and volume. In the process definition, for example, the signatures are defined for which a 28-page content can be produced. This is ultimately dependant on the operational production facilities, which are, in turn, determined by the machinery available. Only then are the necessary individual processes defined (such as imposition, proof, plate exposure, production run, refinement, and finishing.)
This approach to a print product in Hiflex is nearly identical to the JDF specifications.

PDC Tangen and HIFLEX - A JDF Success Story from the North
Norwegian offset printer implements HIFLEX MIS and JDF between five different vendors' systems and realizes ROI of 1847% . PDC Tangen from Oslo is the first Scandinavian printer that implemented JDF connectivity. Starting early in 2006, they to date have realized most convincing results of process automation implementation which earned them the 2007 CIPPI Award in the category "Best cost/benefit realization as a result of process automation implementation". The case story of PDC Tangen revealed impressive benefits of the JDF implementation: an increase in the turnover by 20% (+ EUR 5.2 Mio / NOK 40,6 / USD 7,17), a productivity increase of 25% on the presses and 15% on the folding machines. The profit after taxes was improved by almost 900%. Calculated on a five year period, the competitive advantage due to process automation amounts to EUR 5.180.906 / NOK 40,490,404 / USD 7,131,880 and the investment pays itself back 20 times. The CIP4 Award places the offset printer from the North amongst the world-wide most successful users of process automation technology.

Tanghe Printing Benefits from Investment into JDF
Belgium offset printer successful in the 2006 CIPPI Awards. End of 2002 Patrick Tanghe, CEO of Tanghe Printing NV, decided to start a CIM project (Computer Integrated Manufacturing) for his company. The goal was to integrate all organisational and technical IT functions that are related to the production processes in one central IT system (the HIFLEX MIS). In order to automate processes this system should make joint usage of all data relevant to production. Since the go-ahead four years ago Tanghe Printing NV has increased its total turnover by 45 percent (2006: EUR 4.8 Mio.) while simultaneously reducing the workforce of around 35 to 23 people.

JDF scores well also with customers
CIP4 awards Köller+Nowak for "Biggest Improvement in Efficiency and Customer Responsiveness". Full-service printing house Köller+Nowak of "Drupa-City" Düsseldorf had already set a course for automation years ago. In the early stages of their journey, Köller+Nowak has seen that automation does't just begin when a job is created in the system but much earlier: it begins with the customer's operations. With the implementation of the HIFLEX eBusiness module in August 2002, Köller+Nowak integrated their customers transparently and efficiently into order processing which provided tangible benefits for the printing house and eventually has also significantly strengthened customer relationships.

HIFLEX CIP4 "Partner Member"
With effect from 2006, Management Information System (MIS) vendor HIFLEX is a "Partner Member" of the international CIP4 Organization. CIP4 encourages the Integration of Processes in Prepress, Press and Postpress and is responsible for the specification of the Job Definition Format (JDF). The increase in HIFLEX's CIP4 membership level permits maximum commitment and enables HIFLEX to participate in working groups that are accessible only to "Partner Members" (e.g. the "CIP4 Advisory Board", the highest authority in the CIP4 Organization). Today, HIFLEX is the only pure MIS-vendor in the CIP4 Organization to have this level of membership. "Partner Member" is the highest level of membership that CIP4 offers (Appointed - Associate - Full - Partner). Currently, 14 of 300+ CIP4 members are partners.
